Smiths Detection Introduces Advanced Air Monitoring System to Detect and Mitigate Chemical Threats

Smiths Detection today announces the introduction of its next-generation SABRE CENTURION II, air monitoring system designed to detect and identify Chemical Warfare Agents (CWAs) and Toxic Industrial Chemicals (TICs) in critical infrastructures. Capable of simultaneous detection of CWAs and TICs, the sophisticated system enables facility managers, building owners, government entities and others to determine a potential threat and mount a rapid, appropriate response.

Centurion II also seamlessly integrates with Smiths Detections FirstView-iSC3 Command and Control software. Capable of working with any brand of analog or IP video surveillance system, the FirstView-iSC3 enables the Centurion II to instantaneously process any alarm and link CCTV video feeds. This advanced integration provides additional information and coordination to a command and control center to help staff make potentially life-saving decisions based on the threat detected.

Stephen Phipson, Group Managing Director of Smiths Detection, said: As the risk of chemical threats in public areas increases all over the world, Smiths Detection continues to develop enhanced detection solutions. Early detection is often the key to saving lives and Centurion II and integrated technologies were designed to meet this challenge.

Centurion II uses Smiths Detections proven Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) technology and can be networked with up to 70 other detectors to provide a comprehensive threat detection system that is then programmed to control air handling systems to isolate and contain a potential threat.

Cherif Rizkalla, President of Smiths Detection, Americas, said: Essentially, the Centurion II helps critical infrastructure command and control or managers detect and evaluate a potential threat and then, based on data and system analysis, determine what procedures need to be implemented. The data collected can be sent to a command and control center for further evaluation, taking the guess work out of these types of situations.

Centurion II is easier to maintain than its predecessor and features an on-board, upgradable library of CWAs and TICs to further ensure that known, unknown and emerging threats can be quickly identified and minimized. Using advanced algorithms to distinguish natural interferants from potential threats, it also helps avoid false alarms, reducing costly and needless building evacuations.
