NASA Specifies Hypertac(R) "Basket of Wires" Technology for all Space Flight Applications

Smiths Interconnect, a division of the global technology business Smiths Group today announces that Hypertronics cPCI connectors, featuring the trademarked Hypertac Basket of Wires technology are the only approved Compact PCI connectors for NASA space flight applications. Further, extensive testing of the Hypertac Basket of Wires technology has now resulted in NASA issuing an addendum to EEE-INST-002 prohibiting the use of both tuning fork and press fit connectors and formally recommending the Hypertac connector technology for use on all future space flight hardware.

NASA worked closely with Hypertronics in developing and testing the Hypertronics cPCI connector family, resulting in the release of NASA Specification S-311-P-822. Based on the success of this project, Hypertronics has become a premier supplier of interconnect solutions for numerous programs at NASA including the SDO (Solar Dynamics Observatory), MSL (Mars Science Laboratory), HST (Hubble Space Telescope) and LRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter). Hypertronics was chosen based on their engineering and design capabilities to deliver high reliability and leading edge interconnect solutions for the aerospace industry.

The technology used in the Hypertac wire basket socket contact system provides NASA with a high density/low resistance interconnect system with 360˚ contact that robustly performs in extreme environments including thermal excursions, corrosive atmospheres and excessive shock and vibration. The Hypertronics connectors improve system reliability by ensuring signal integrity while eliminating contact fretting in severely harsh operating conditions. These connectors enable NASA to design circuit boards to commercial standards; improving lead times and reducing system costs.
