Brooms Over Broome is continuing its partnership with Cleaning for a Reason, a national nonprofit that connects people undergoing cancer treatment with free professional home cleaning. The locally owned company donates scheduled cleanings through the program so residents can keep their homes in order while they focus on treatment, recovery, and time with family.
Cleaning for a Reason is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2006. It matches eligible patients who are recovering from cancer surgery, in active treatment, or in hospice care with participating residential cleaning companies. Under the program model, a matched patient receives two free home cleanings, one a month for two months. The cleanings are standard residential services rather than deep or specialty projects. The nonprofit works with a network of partner companies across the United States and Canada so that the donated work is performed by established local firms.
Debbie Godbay, owner of Brooms Over Broome, said the partnership fits the company’s long-standing approach to community work. “Giving someone one less thing to worry about while they're undergoing cancer treatment is incredibly meaningful to our team. We're honored to use our services to make a positive difference in our community,” Godbay said.
The arrangement places Brooms Over Broome among the cleaning companies that volunteer labor and supplies for patients matched in their service area. Once a patient is matched, the company schedules the visits and sends a trained crew to complete the work. That structure keeps the process familiar for both the household and the team, using the same methods applied to ordinary residential accounts. The donated visits are intended to reduce the physical demand of routine housework during a period when fatigue and medical appointments often limit what a household can manage.
Godbay described the practical purpose of the partnership. “Partnering with Cleaning for a Reason allows us to support individuals and families during some of life's most difficult moments,” she said.
The company has already applied that model in the community. A client who had recently undergone cancer surgery publicly noted that Brooms Over Broome donated cleaning time when housework could not be managed, and that the crew adjusted scheduling as appointments changed. That account aligns with the partnership’s stated purpose of removing a routine burden during treatment rather than adding a new process for the household to organize.
Brooms Over Broome has provided residential and commercial cleaning since 1994 across the Triple Cities and the wider Broome County area, including Endicott, Binghamton, Endwell, Vestal, Johnson City, Apalachin, Kirkwood, and Conklin. Services include recurring house cleaning, deep cleaning, window washing, move-in and move-out cleaning, student housing upkeep, and commercial cleaning. Recurring work follows set checklists so results stay consistent from visit to visit, and the same approach is used when a Cleaning for a Reason match is scheduled.
The company began with a newspaper advertisement placed by two friends and later grew into a family-oriented team. Owner Debbie Godbay carried the business forward after the original partnership changed, and family members later joined the operation. Core values listed by the company are trust, commitment, productivity, respect, and quality. Team members are trained and background-checked. The business reports more than 100,000 cleanings completed, more than 30 years of operation, and hundreds of recurring accounts.
Community projects have sat alongside that daily work. Earlier this year, the company hired seasonal high school and college students to prepare student housing before the fall semester, and in September it began donating recurring cleanings for a local Humane Society. The Cleaning for a Reason partnership continues that pattern by directing existing residential capacity toward households dealing with cancer treatment.
The donated cleanings do not replace the company’s ordinary paid services. Households and businesses continue to schedule recurring and specialty work on the same terms as before. The partnership simply reserves a portion of that capacity for patients matched through the nonprofit.
Brooms Over Broome remains a locally owned cleaning company serving homes and workplaces in the Triple Cities region. Its continued participation with Cleaning for a Reason applies established residential methods to households that have been matched for free service during cancer treatment.
