Devotional born after a 2019 brain injury offers hurting readers a way to give thanks through the holidays

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Nov. 2, 2026 - PRLog -- Award-winning journalist Dianna Hobbs, founder of EEW Magazine Online, released Finding Gratitude in the Dark: 28 Days to See God's Goodness More Clearly on Nov. 2, her 50th birthday. The devotional is available now on Amazon Kindle. It offers readers facing grief, illness or disappointment a way to give thanks through the holiday season.

Hobbs began the book in 2019 while recovering from a brain injury that left her paralyzed and unable to speak. It is published by the American Alliance for Black Mental Wellness, which she co-founded. Readers can join a free 28-Day Gratitude Challenge through Thanksgiving weekend at GratitudeInTheDark.com. Press materials, photos and bios are available at EmpoweringEverydayWomen.org/press.

In August 2019, a rare reaction to a common antibiotic sent Hobbs to intensive care. She suffered more than two dozen seizures, a ministroke and left-side paralysis, and lost her ability to speak. The brain damage is permanent.

Three months later, Hobbs wrote a 28-day gratitude series for her devotional blog, Your Daily Cup of Inspiration, looking up where commas and periods belonged as she went.

"I didn't know why God told me to write in that condition," Hobbs said. "Now I know. He wanted me to write from the valley, before triumph, for those who are still valley dwellers like me."

Hobbs finished the book while grieving her father and brother, who died four months apart. Nov. 13 marks the first anniversary of her brother's death.

Hobbs, who lives with anxiety and PTSD after her injury, writes about a gratitude that makes room for grief and for professional mental health care alongside faith. Each day pairs Scripture with a personal story, gratitude prompts and a prayer.

"People in a low place need to hear from someone who is struggling day in and day out like them," Hobbs said. "They need to learn how to be grateful through it, not after it or for it."

A paperback edition will follow. Hobbs is available now for written interviews.
