What Happened?

Shares of industrial supplier Fastenal (NASDAQ: FAST) fell 5.2% in the pre-market session after the company reported third-quarter 2026 financial results and trimmed its full-year device signing targets.

According to a company press release, Fastenal reported earnings per share of $0.35 vs analyst estimates of $0.34 (3.9% beat) on revenue of $2.46 billion vs analyst estimates of $2.44 billion (15.5% year-on-year growth, 1% beat) for the third quarter of 2026. The company noted a 15.5% increase in daily sales compared to the previous year, alongside an operating margin of 21.5% that represented a 90 basis point improvement. Management also reported generating $422 million in operating cash flow and returning $328 million to shareholders through dividends and share buybacks.

However, the distributor maintained its revised full-year expectation for FASTBin and FASTVend device signings to a range of 27,000 to 29,000 MEUs (machine equivalent units) vs previous estimates of between 28,000 and 30,000 MEUs. Also, Fastenal projected its full-year 2026 capital expenditure forecast to between $310 million and $330 million, citing costs related to an Atlanta hub replacement, network picking efficiency initiatives, delayed IT projects, and elevated trucking expenses.

After the initial drop, the shares shed some of the losses and rose to $50.05, down 2.7% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Fastenal’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 2 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 6 months ago when the stock dropped 7.1% on the news that the company reported first-quarter 2026 earnings that failed to impress investors amid a broader market sell-off.

The company met Wall Street's expectations, with revenue growing 12.4% year-over-year to $2.2 billion and earnings per share of $0.30, both in line with consensus estimates. Key profitability metrics such as gross and operating margins also held steady compared to the same quarter last year. However, merely meeting expectations was not enough to satisfy the market. The stock's decline was amplified by negative macroeconomic news, as reports of a potential U.S. partial blockade of the Strait of Hormuz soured investor sentiment, prompting a flight from equities.

Fastenal is up 23.7% since the beginning of the year, and at $50.05 per share, it is trading close to its 52-week high of $52.38 from August 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Fastenal’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,799.
