California Under Scrutiny for Not Monitoring Methane Leaks from Idle Wells

Silixa, a global leader in providing fibre optic-powered data tools, now offers in-well flowing diagnostics/well integrity monitoring and real-time visualisation of complete well dynamics to ensure the wellbore is stable and safe throughout its lifecycle—from drilling and production to decommissioning.

While it’s critical to ensure safe oil and gas production, well integrity monitoring can help organisations identify and avoid potential formation of fluid leaks to cause zero/less harm to the environment.

According to a Log Angeles Times article, even though California enforces stringent laws to limit greenhouse emissions, regulatory authorities have stated that they still don’t add methane gas leaks from the 35,000 idle wells perforating the landscape to the state’s emission inventory.

This statement has caused alarm, as the state pledges to hit Net Zero and carbon neutrality targets by 2045.

However, Silixa claims its ArrayLog, a suite of integrated distributed fibre optic technologies, utilises distributed temperature and distributed acoustics data to detect any wellbore integrity issue in a fraction of time and more efficiently than traditional processes. Silixa adds that pinpointing well integrity failure leading to fugitive toxic gaseous release is critical as decommissioned wells can also be used as carbon sinks in the future.

Studies reveal that methane is a leading GHG and contributor to recent abrupt global warming. This non-toxic gas has contributed to around 30% of climate change since the pre-industrial periods and started proliferating more rapidly than in any other period since the 1980s. More alarmingly, methane is 84-86 times more potent than CO2 at increasing Earth’s surface temperature over 20 years.

In light of this data, researchers mark the importance of curbing methane leaks at active and redundant petroleum sites.

According to Silixa, its high-end technologies (iDAS and ULTIMA DTS) included in ArrayLog run a fibre-optic log as either an e-line, slickline, cable, or coiled tubing intervention to efficiently pinpoint leaking completion elements, like plugs and valves, or identify and track the root of fluid movement behind casing as a sign of barrier failure. Such wellbore integrity failure can lead to negative financial and environmental consequences, e.g., high GHG emissions, fluid seepage and spills, groundwater contamination, and more.

Silixa says its legacy fibre optics operate as a sensor array to ensure a simultaneous survey of the entire fibre pathway, promptly and accurately localising well integrity problems at undetermined depths.

Founded in 2007, Silixa is an award-winning globally recognised manufacturer and distributor of next-generation fibre optic technologies and high-fidelity data sets. The company aims to help businesses in the mining, oil and gas, alternative energy, infrastructure, and environmental and earth science sectors solve mission-critical measurement challenges.
