Denver, CO — Luis Cortes Romero, Partner at Novo Legal Group, is a DACA recipient and served as one of the lead attorneys in the landmark case DHS v. Regents of the University of California before the U.S. Supreme Court, which struck down the Trump Administration’s 2017 decision to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

“Wednesday, June 15, 2022 marks 10 years of the successful efforts of the immigrant rights movement in establishing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program under the Obama Administration. DACA has provided over 800,000 undocumented individuals who arrived in the United States as children with the ability to go to school, build careers, start families, and participate fully in their communities.

“But while DACA is a crucially important policy that protects hundreds of thousands of young people in this country like me, DACA was always meant to be a stepping stone, not a result. DACA does not provide any kind of pathway to permanent residence or citizenship. It does not give DACA recipients full freedom from the anxiety and fear of deportation; nor does it give us the status we deserve. It simply cannot serve as a replacement for what we truly need: congressional action for noncitizens and comprehensive immigration reform.

“DACA’s 10 year anniversary also marks a reminder of Congress’ decade long failure to prioritize fixing our fractured, byzantine immigration system. Our country is less prosperous and less just as a result.

“Through my work with Novo Legal Group, I am dedicated to fighting for a more humane and just immigration system that respects the rights of immigrants and gives everyone the opportunity to seek the pursuit of happiness.”
