Pacifica School District Taps The Civility Zone for Civility-based 21st Century Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Program

By: PRLog

SAN FRANCISCO - May 10, 2021 - PRLog -- Narrowly focused professional development on some harmful behaviors or "isms" did not appeal to the Pacifica School District (PSD). They wanted an inclusive program benefiting all PSD stakeholders with a comprehensive and proactive approach that would transform mindsets, engagements, preserve human dignity, and interactions between administrators, staff, teachers, students, and parents in the PSD.

Schools are struggling to find effective ways to respond to the civil unrest, conflict wars, oppression, and the COVID-19 pandemic adversely impacting our society. Harmful engagements and words between people are nothing new, but the recent bold attacks and mistreatment towards who and what is disliked demonstrates we have a long way to go. These engagements between people are taking a toll on the school environment and directly impacting student learners, school employees, parents and families, and communities.

Pacifica School District's Human Resources Department contracted with founder Dr. Rhea Settles of The Civility Zone (www.thecivilityzone.com), a liberation education agency that teaches people how to share resources, spaces, and engage with each other without causing harm no matter the differences, dislikes, or the environment. The Civility Zone uses a 21st Century Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) framework called Mindful Civility. Participants learn the Five Mindful Civility Elements which includes knowing and monitoring assumptions, biases, and privileges, and creating their own action plan to intentionally avoid harming other people. Dr. Settles has developed an inclusive and intriguing self-regulation model that benefits everyone not just a select few.
