NANJING, CN / ACCESS Newswire / October 22, 2026 / From late September to early October 2026, Chinese singer Hua Chenyu staged seven outdoor concerts at Tangshan Music Valley in Nanjing, spanning the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day Golden Week holidays. According to official concert information, the series will continue on Oct. 24-25 and Nov. 7-8 and 14-15, bringing the total to 13 shows over a practice of integrating culture, tourism and performance.

Citing data from "Nanjing Release," the Nanjing municipal government's official Weibo account, the first five shows during the National Day holiday period drew nearly 540,000 visitors to the Tangshan area and helped push Nanjing past Beijing to first place nationwide in holiday hotel bookings. CCTV-1's "Evening News" and CCTV-13's "News Live Room" also featured the Mars Camp setting in its coverage of the pink muhly grass fields at Tangshan Mine Park.

The phenomenon is not isolated. Data from the China Association of Performing Arts shows that in the first half of 2026, box office revenue for large-scale concerts and music festivals with audiences of 5,000 or more reached 17.111 billion yuan ($2.4 billion), up 17.70 percent year-on-year, while attendance reached 23.28 million, up 20.37 percent. The "performance plus tourism" model has become a notable feature of China's consumer market.

Music Works and IFPI Chart Performance

The strength of the live performance market is underpinned by artists' long-term body of work and fan loyalty. Hua rose to fame in 2013 after winning Hunan TV's talent competition "Super Boy." In January 2025, he released his sixth original studio album, "TIPPING POINT". The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's (IFPI) Global Album Sales Chart for 2025 ranked the album 8th worldwide with 1.49 million copies sold, making it the only Chinese mainland album in the top 20.

The IFPI global sales chart primarily tracks paid physical records and paid digital albums - excluding free streaming data - and is therefore widely regarded in the international music industry as an objective measure of an artist's core market appeal and fans' willingness to pay. As of July 2026, digital sales of the album surpassed 1.62 million copies. That sustained online appeal has laid a solid foundation of audience demand for his long-duration live residency shows.

Nanjing Residency: How One Concert Series Moves a City

The format of the Mars Concert 2.0 differs from traditional concerts. According to the concert's official account, the shows use a "one ticket, all access" model, with each day's performance running 6 to 7 hours, allowing attendees to watch both afternoon and evening sets with a single ticket. The venue is divided into three zones - the main stage area, Mars Utopia and Mars Camp - incorporating themed art installations, camping and dining services. Mars Camp is open to the public, and those without tickets may enter freely. The arrangement expands the traditional "buy a ticket, enter, watch, leave" concert logic into an all-day scene for strolling, lingering and spending. According to on-site reporting by China Daily, by day visitors move among art installations, food stalls, interactive games and natural scenery; after nightfall, the space shifts with lighting and music from a daytime playground into a nighttime music venue.

Hua previously revealed during a livestream that the main stage was built with roughly 2,000 tons of steel, with a main stage screen area of 9,000 square meters, an overall span of 130 meters and structures reaching up to 30 meters high. The main stage is built around an "8+1" column design, comprising eight sets of giant dynamic triangular prism mechanical columns and one entrance installation that can rotate, open, close, fold and reassemble in sync with different songs. Organizers said this represents the initial stage design and that specific parameters for the Nanjing shows may be slightly adjusted. The Nanjing setlist and musical arrangements were also revised, with several works performed in newly rearranged versions, including "The giant in sorrow", "The Giant Deer" and "Jackdaw Boy", some of which had not appeared at concerts for years.

Before the Nanjing shows, Hua's tour had already left a record of economic impact in multiple cities. In May 2025, he staged three concerts at the Qiandeng Lake Music Arena in Nanhai, Foshan, drawing about 120,000 fans. According to statistics from Nanhai District in Foshan, the concerts were expected to drive more than 680 million yuan ($96 million) in cultural, tourism and commercial spending, including lodging, dining, transportation, scenic spots and shopping. Cross-city attendance was a key driver of that spending. An analysis of fan origins for the Foshan shows found that out-of-province attendees accounted for 57.7 percent and out-of-city but in-province attendees 37.5 percent - a combined total exceeding 95 percent - indicating that the spending came mainly from visitors drawn to the event rather than a shift in local residents' routine consumption.

In May 2024, Hua staged a seaside sunrise concert in Yantai. According to local cultural and tourism authorities, the event drew about 130,000 participants and became a landmark experiment in diversifying Chinese mainland concert formats. Set by the sea and timed to sunrise, it broke with the conventional framework of stadium concerts in both venue form and viewing experience.

From Individual Case to Broader Trend

Hua's case is a microcosm of China's concert economy. A briefing by the China Association of Performing Arts on the first half of 2026 shows that the large-scale performance market continues to expand, well-known IPs are steadily extending into second- and third-tier cities, and the "performance plus tourism" model has become the norm. Hua's touring trajectory - from arenas in 2014 to the 100,000-seat Bird's Nest National Stadium in 2018 to the 2024 seaside sunrise concert in Yantai - serves as an individual footnote to that trend.

Hua Chenyu's Business Ventures: From Music IP to Consumer Brand

Beyond music-related pursuits, Hua's business footprint is also expanding. This transformation from music audience to consumer base constitutes another dimension of his IP commercialization. In March 2026, he co-founded the personal care and home goods brand "POINZ" with the daily chemical company Xiaokuo Group, holding a 20 percent stake as co-founder and participating in brand positioning, visual identity and product selection. On its launch day, the brand's omnichannel GMV exceeded 21 million yuan ($3 million).

Two-Way Output: From Music Works to a Diversified Ecosystem

From music creation and live performance to cross-sector brand ventures, Hua is demonstrating the diversified brand extension potential of a Chinese pop artist. His original album's top 10 placement on IFPI's global album sales chart underscores the commercial potential of Chinese mainland original music under international recording industry standards. The "Mars Concert" theme-park model, with its long-duration residency tours in Nanjing and elsewhere, has successfully explored a viable approach to integrating cultural tourism with live performance. Together with the commercial launch of a consumer brand, it forms a complete commercial loop of "creative works - live experience - physical consumption." This multi-pronged expansion from music output to comprehensive offline experience offers a valuable practical reference for the commercialization of Chinese pop music within the international recording and live performance industry chains.
