Company overview

Known for its unique land acquisition strategy, NVR (NYSE: NVR) is a respected homebuilder and mortgage company in the United States.

Revenue growth

Examining a company’s long-term performance can provide clues about its quality. Any business can put up a good quarter or two, but many enduring ones grow for years. Unfortunately, NVR struggled to consistently increase demand as its $9.32 billion of sales for the trailing 12 months was close to its revenue five years ago. This wasn’t a great result and is a sign of poor business quality.

NVR Quarterly Revenue

Long-term growth is the most important, but within industrials, a half-decade historical view may miss new industry trends or demand cycles. NVR’s recent performance shows its demand remained suppressed as its revenue has declined by 4% annually over the last two years. NVR isn’t alone in its struggles as the home builders industry experienced a cyclical downturn, with many similar businesses observing lower sales at this time. NVR Year-On-Year Revenue Growth

This quarter, NVR missed Wall Street’s estimates and reported a rather uninspiring 7.9% year-on-year revenue decline, generating $2.40 billion of revenue.

Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 4.6% over the next 12 months. While this projection implies its newer products and services will fuel better top-line performance, it is still below average for the sector.

Operating margin

NVR has been a well-oiled machine over the last five years. It demonstrated elite profitability for an industrials business, boasting an average operating margin of 18%. This result was particularly impressive because of its low gross margin, which is mostly a factor of what it sells and takes huge shifts to move meaningfully. Companies have more control over their operating margins, and it’s a show of well-managed operations if they’re high when gross margins are low.

Looking at the trend in its profitability, NVR’s operating margin decreased by 7.1 percentage points over the last five years. Many home builders companies also saw their margins fall (along with revenue, as mentioned above) because the cycle turned in the wrong direction. We hope NVR can emerge from this a stronger company, as the silver lining of a downturn is that market share can be won and efficiencies found.

NVR Trailing 12-Month Operating Margin (GAAP)

In Q3, NVR generated an operating margin profit margin of 13.5%, down 2.7 percentage points year on year. Since NVR’s operating margin decreased more than its gross margin, we can assume it was less efficient because expenses such as marketing, R&D, and administrative overhead increased.

Earnings per share

We track the long-term change in earnings per share (EPS) for the same reason as long-term revenue growth. Compared to revenue, however, EPS highlights whether a company’s growth is profitable.

NVR’s EPS grew at 3.3% compounded annual growth rate over the last five years. This performance was better than its flat revenue but doesn’t tell us much about its business quality because its operating margin didn’t improve.

NVR Trailing 12-Month EPS (Non-GAAP)

Diving into the nuances of NVR’s earnings can give us a better understanding of its performance. A five-year view shows that NVR has repurchased its stock, shrinking its share count by 27.7%. This tells us its EPS outperformed its revenue not because of increased operational efficiency but financial engineering, as buybacks boost per share earnings. NVR Diluted Shares Outstanding

Like with revenue, we analyze EPS over a more recent period because it can provide insight into an emerging theme or development for the business.

For NVR, its two-year annual EPS declines of 13.9% show it’s continued to underperform. These results were bad no matter how you slice the data.

In Q3, NVR reported adjusted EPS of $89.45, down from $112.33 in the same quarter last year. This print missed analysts’ estimates. Over the next 12 months, Wall Street expects NVR’s full-year EPS to grow 5.2% from $362.71 to $381.43.

Key takeaways from NVR’s Q3 results

We struggled to find many positives in these results. Its revenue missed and its EPS fell short of Wall Street’s estimates. Overall, this was a weaker quarter. The stock remained flat at $6,096 immediately following the results.

NVR may have had a tough quarter, but does that actually create an opportunity to invest right now? The latest quarter does matter, but not nearly as much as longer-term fundamentals and valuation, when deciding if the stock is a buy.
