FlipGift, a marketplace where consumers sell unused gift cards and buyers purchase store credit below face value, has expanded the range of retailers supported on its platform.
The expansion broadens coverage across several consumer categories, including home improvement, beauty and personal care, apparel, electronics, pet supplies and general merchandise. The addition means sellers holding credit at a wider set of stores can convert it to cash, while buyers gain discounted purchasing power at more of the retailers they already use.
The move responds to a persistent gap in the gift card market. Industry estimates place the value of unredeemed gift cards in the United States in the billions of dollars annually. Much of that balance sits with people who received credit at stores they do not shop at, a mismatch that no amount of time resolves on its own.
"The constraint has never been demand," said Kirill, founder of FlipGift. "People want to move credit they will not use, and other people want a discount at stores they visit anyway. The constraint is coverage. Every retailer we add is a group of cardholders who previously had no practical option other than leaving the balance in a drawer."
FlipGift operates on an escrow model. Sellers list a card, the platform verifies the balance before the listing goes live, and the buyer's payment is held until the transfer is confirmed. Card codes are not exchanged directly between parties, which addresses the most common failure in informal resale, where a previous holder retains the code and drains the balance after the sale.
On the buying side, purchased credit functions as ordinary payment at the retailer. Sale prices and store promotions apply as they normally would, since the merchant processes a standard transaction.
The expanded coverage also extends to the platform's purchase flow, in which a buyer posts a product link and a verified cardholder places the order at the retailer and ships it directly. That approach reaches merchants where discounted card supply is thin, and it removes the card from the transaction entirely.
FlipGift supports payouts in both conventional currency and cryptocurrency, an option the company says appeals to sellers who want faster settlement.
Consumers looking to sell gift cards online can list a card and receive an offer without an upfront fee. The platform's discount range varies by retailer and depends on demand for credit at that merchant.
