Dan Koukol ran a plastic injection molding company before he built software for one. The gap he says he kept running into -- a system of record that could never quite bend to how his operation actually worked - is the one his company is now trying to close.
That company, founded in 2021 as Digit, has renamed itself Sutton (heysutton.com) and launched Sutton Studio, a feature it positions as the point of the rebrand. Rather than only configuring predefined ERP workflows, customers describe a tool they need and have it generated on their live operational data. Sutton calls itself an ERP built for the AI era, applying generative AI not only to answering questions about operations but to building the workflows themselves.
The bet is on economics. ERP customization has historically been slow and expensive enough that smaller companies skipped it and lived with spreadsheets and workarounds. If AI can turn a described requirement into a working tool cheaply and quickly, that calculus changes - and the change favors the businesses previously priced out of custom development.
"For most operations, you could buy software that makes you change your workflows. Or you could pay someone to build something custom and wait months for it, only for it to change again. Instead, we built the layer an operator can create and edit themselves, using their business's data and workflows within Sutton," said Koukol, co-founder and CEO.
Sutton runs sales, operations, purchasing and shipping in one system; Studio sits on top of that data. Early users have built production-floor dashboards, delivery boards split by fulfillment source, supplier scorecards, receiving inspection forms and yield trackers, according to the company. "It's like an engineer building a custom app for you in a couple of minutes," said early user Andrew Pedersen of Pac Basic.
Sutton was founded by Koukol, Simon Kronenberg and Alena Dagneau, and cites roughly $6.3 million in funding and customers across North America and Europe.
