Schuren joins AtScale to close the gap between LLM reasoning and enterprise data, establishing the governed semantic layer as required infrastructure for reliable AI agents.
AtScale, the leader in governed universal semantic layer technology, today announced the appointment of Jay Schuren as President. Schuren, formerly Chief Revenue Officer at DataRobot, joins AtScale to lead global go-to-market, operations, and AI innovation. His appointment marks the company’s shift from supporting AI experimentation to enabling trusted, production-grade AI, where the semantic layer provides the governed foundation autonomous agents require to operate reliably.
As organizations adopt powerful reasoning engines, they face a critical bottleneck: the "Context Challenge." For AI agents to drive real business value, they require three distinct pillars: reasoning capabilities (provided by LLMs), external context from the web, and accurate internal context from an organization’s proprietary data. While LLMs excel at reasoning, they misinterpret table structures, fail to reconcile systems across applications and databases, and cannot reliably handle time-based logic. Without a translation layer, results become inaccurate, inconsistent, and lose the critical audit trail enterprises need.
AtScale addresses this by providing the "Internal Context", a governed layer of business metrics that ensures AI agents operate from a single source of truth.
"I have watched dozens of organizations attempt to 'talk to their data,' only to find that LLMs were never trained on the nuance of their corporate strategy," said Jay Schuren, President of AtScale. "The problem isn't the model; it's the missing context. If an AI agent calculates Gross Dollar Retention differently than your CFO, ignoring caveats or time shifts, it isn't just wrong; it’s dangerous to the business. To have real enterprise impact, agents need a semantic layer to ensure that 'Product Usage' means the same thing to the LLM as it does to the engineering team. AtScale provides that guaranteed translation."
Schuren’s career has been defined by his ability to align technical engineering teams with C-suite business stakeholders—a dynamic that perfectly mirrors AtScale’s mission to get AI models and business leaders speaking the exact same language. As President, Schuren will oversee AtScale’s global go-to-market, operations, and AI innovation. At DataRobot, he drove 51% year-over-year growth in new bookings, helping hundreds of the Fortune 500 move AI from pilot to production.
"Jay has built and led global organizations through major AI platform shifts before," said Chris Lynch, Executive Chairman and CEO at AtScale. "He understands how companies move from early adoption to operational standard. That experience is critical as customers begin treating semantic layers as required infrastructure rather than optional tooling."
Schuren’s appointment follows AtScale’s recent strategic equity investment led by Snowflake and the additions of Chief Product Officer Luis Maldonado and Vice President of Customer Success Amy Miller. Together, the expanded leadership team positions the company to support global enterprise adoption as organizations standardize governed semantic layers as the foundation for AI and analytics.
As enterprises move from experimentation to operational AI, AtScale continues investing in open standards, including the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and in its Semantic Modeling Language (SML), which allows AI systems to execute against trusted business logic rather than generate approximations. Under Schuren’s leadership, the company will focus on scaling adoption of this architecture across customers, partners, and cloud ecosystems.
