IRCC Invites 1,325 Candidates To The Latest Express Entry Draw For All Programs

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued Invitations to Apply (ITA) in the latest Express Entry draw.

The department invited 1,325 candidates to apply in an Express Entry draw across all programs. Candidates needed a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) of 542 to be eligible for an ITA.

The next Express Entry draw follows the most recent results on December 8, in which 5,900 candidates received an ITA with a minimum CRS of 481 in a category-based selection draw for candidates in STEM occupations. On December 7, a category draw was held for people fluent in the French language, to which 1,000 candidates from the Express Entry group with a minimum CRS of 470 were invited.

There was also an all-program Express Entry draw on December 6 for candidates with a minimum CRS of 561. It was the first draw to take place in over a month. Before that, the most recent drawing was a category-based selection drawing for candidates in healthcare occupations on October 26.

IRCC did not confirm the cause of the temporary pause in draws. However, on November 14, the department tweeted that there was an IT issue with the Express Entry profile builder for candidates who had received an ITA and were attempting to upload their applications to the IRCC website.

Two days later, on November 16, the department reported that the problem had been fixed, but drawings did not immediately resume as expected. There are many possible reasons why IRCC may delay the next Express Entry draw, for example, if they are already on track to meet the targets for Express Entry candidates set out in the Immigration Tiers Plan, IT issues, staff changes or updates to the Comprehensive Classification System.

Summary of Express Entry draw:

December 18: Entire program 1,325 542

December 8: STEM Occupations 5,900 481

December 7: Mastery of the French language 1,000 470

December 6: All programs

December 6: Entire program 4,750 561

What is Express Entry?

An Express Entry draw is ideal for evaluating candidates based on their human capital factors and then assigning them a score. The factors include work experience, language ability, education, age, and occupation.

Once candidates receive an ITA, they can submit their application to IRCC. The department has a six-month service standard to process Express Entry applications and issue a final decision.

What is category-based selection?

Last May, IRCC announced the introduction of category-based invitation selection rounds for Express Entry candidates.

Through these new rounds, the IRCC targets candidates with a specific, in-demand attribute that the Minister of Immigration believes will help strengthen Canada's workforce and economy. One of the six categories is aimed at Express Entry candidates with French language proficiency. The remaining five are for candidates who have work experience in a sector currently experiencing labour shortages in Canada, including:

  • Health care;
  • STEM professions;
  • Trade winds;
  • Transport; and
  • Agriculture and Agri-food

ITAs issued in category-based selection rounds will count toward the goals for highly skilled federal workers (Express Entry draw) in the Immigration Tiering Plan. Over the next three years, Canada will admit up to 114,000 new permanent residents yearly via the Next Express Entry draw until the end of 2025.
