Published on February 3, 2023, the study, conducted by the Yale School of Public Health and funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), investigated the quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) lost due to genital herpes for residents in the United States for the year 2018. The study estimated the long-term impacts of genital herpes on those who suffer from it and quantified the results in a manner that can be easily understood.
Researchers considered the time lost due to conditions, such as symptomatic herpes outbreaks, psychosocial impacts associated with diagnosis and recurrences, urinary retention caused by sacral radiculitis, aseptic meningitis, Mollaret's meningitis, and neonatal herpes, by Americans aged 18 to 49 years who are living with HSV-1 or HSV-2. The study referenced and incorporated the results of 74 prior publications to arrive at its findings.
The study concluded, “0.05-lifetime QALYs were lost per incident genital herpes infection acquired in 2018, equivalent to losing 0.05 years or about 18 days of life for one person with perfect health. The average number of QALYs lost per infection due to genital HSV-1 and HSV-2 was 0.01 and 0.05, respectively. The burden of genital HSV-1 is higher among women, while the burden of HSV-2 is higher among men.”
