What Happened?

Shares of semiconductor company Semtech (NASDAQ: SMTC) jumped 9% in the afternoon session after the company delivered strong second-quarter financial results and issued third-quarter guidance that substantially exceeded Wall Street expectations.

Semtech grew its second-quarter revenue 32.7% year-over-year to $341.9 million (a 4% beat versus consensus), while adjusted earnings reached $0.71 per share, topping estimates of $0.61. Profitability was also a notable bright spot, with operating margins flipping from negative 6.3% a year ago to a positive 16.3%, and adjusted EBITDA coming in at $91.1 million to beat estimates by over 23%. Growth was propelled by data center revenue, which surged 91% year-over-year to a record $100 million on robust demand for 800G products, alongside a 58% increase in LoRa-enabled sales to $58 million. Furthermore, operational efficiency improved as inventory days outstanding dropped to 98 from 135 in the previous quarter.

Looking ahead, management provided a blowout third-quarter outlook, projecting revenue of $410 million at the midpoint—well ahead of the $357.7 million analyst forecast. Third-quarter adjusted EPS and EBITDA guidance also crushed estimates, coming in at $1.05 and $134.3 million at the midpoint, respectively.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Semtech’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 62 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 1 day ago when the stock gained 4.5% on the news that easing selling pressure, lower Treasury yields, and positive momentum from Asian markets boosted investor sentiment ahead of Nvidia's quarterly earnings and key inflation data. Shares of major chipmakers and data-storage companies, including Micron Technology, SanDisk, Western Digital, and Advanced Micro Devices, pushed higher to recover from sharp declines in the previous session. Broader sentiment across the technology sector was buoyed by falling U.S. Treasury yields and retreating oil prices, which help support valuations for high-growth industries. Per Reuters, investors are closely eyeing AI bellwether Nvidia's upcoming financial results for evidence that global demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure remains robust. Overnight gains in overseas semiconductor peers, such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing and SK Hynix, further supported the sector-wide rebound.

Semtech is up 81.3% since the beginning of the year, but at $136.42 per share, it is still trading 19.4% below its 52-week high of $169.35 from June 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Semtech’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,004.
