What Happened?

Shares of e-commerce software company Commerce (NASDAQ: CMRC) fell 33.2% in the afternoon session after the company reported disappointing second-quarter 2026 financial results and issued weak forward-looking guidance.

The e-commerce software company's revenue was flat year-over-year at $84.51 million, narrowly missing Wall Street's expectations. While adjusted earnings per share of $0.08 significantly beat estimates, investors focused on the bleaker outlook. The company's revenue guidance for the upcoming quarter came in 5.7% below analysts' forecasts. Furthermore, Commerce slashed its full-year revenue guidance by 5% to a midpoint of $340.5 million. Adding to concerns, the company’s cash profitability also worsened, with its free cash flow margin falling 14 percentage points compared to the same quarter last year, signaling a challenging road ahead.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Commerce’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 30 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Commerce and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 10 days ago when the stock gained 6.2% on the news that its ecommerce platform, BigCommerce, announced that Waterco, a global manufacturer of swimming pool products, launched a new business-to-business (B2B) buying experience on its platform. Waterco is shifting from a traditional phone and email-based ordering system to a modern, self-service online experience. This move enables its customers to browse products, check inventory, place orders, and manage their accounts directly online. The adoption of the BigCommerce platform by a global distributor highlights a significant business win for Commerce, showcasing its ability to support large-scale B2B operations.

Commerce is down 44.2% since the beginning of the year, and at $2.27 per share, it is trading 58.9% below its 52-week high of $5.51 from November 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Commerce’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $35.86.
