Retailer Recalls Imported Aromatherapy Room Spray Due to Microbial Contamination Concerns

By: WebWire

In October, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a large retailer was recalling thousands of bottles of aromatherapy room spray imported from India. Six different scents of the product are part of the recall that was initiated due to the possible presence of a rare bacteria and risk of serious injury and death.

According to CPSC:

Tests conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) determined that a bottle of the room spray contained the rare and dangerous bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei which causes melioidosis, a condition that is difficult to diagnose and can be fatal. CDC has been investigating a cluster of four confirmed cases of melioidosis including two deaths in the U.S. Though the source of these four infections has not been confirmed by CDC, the bottle with the same type of bacteria was found in the home of one of the melioidosis decedents.

The aromatherapy room spray was sold at about 55 of the retailer's stores nationwide and from their online presence. The four cases of melioidosis in the U.S. were reported in Kansas, Minnesota, Texas, and Georgia. Consumers with the recalled products are advised to immediately stop using the spray and to follow special instructions the CDC has provided online.

Helping manufacturers, retailers, and importers prevent these types of incidents by identifying microbial contamination and sterility issues are the dedicated scientists at MPL Laboratories. Their testing experts operate a FDA and DEA registered facility that offers cGMP and ISO 17025 compliant microbiology testing of personal care products, pharmaceuticals, OTC medicines, cosmetics, and other consumer goods.
