Three genealogists unite to create handy reference sheets for family historians

By: PRLog

LONDON - Oct. 1, 2021 - PRLog -- Launching today are a set of genealogy quick reference sheets aimed at family historians researching their UK ancestors. The Family History Quick Reference Sheets pack is the result of a collaboration between Mish Holman from Family History Gifts, Maddy Mills The Crafty Genealogist and Karen de Bruyne from NotJustAnyFamily.

The 5 star rated Family History Gifts has been seeking new suppliers and collaborators for the past two years while looking for unique products for its customer base. While it is well-known for providing genealogy experience days and research, Family History Gifts has expanded its product line with family tree jewellery and t-shirts, but it wants to go further.

"It's important for us to look ahead and see where the gift market takes us," says Family History Gifts founder Michelle. "I saw what Maddy Mills was doing and I liked her approach, it's very different, so we met up to discuss what we could do together going forward. Maddy was keen to keep her identity and her business, The Crafty Genealogist separate, and I agreed.

"I had already spoken to genealogist Karen de Bruyne of NotJustAnyFamily about a position with Family History Gifts providing genealogy experiences and so when COVID struck, all three of us met up for a video chat. It was from there the ideas for the information guides evolved."

When the plans came together, the three genealogists realised there was a gap in the UK market for flexible use information guides which covered areas such as handy dates for genealogists, tips for improving illegible documents and reading old handwriting, drawing up pedigree charts, Google search tips, weights and measures quick reference and a guide for using DNA with family history.

Michelle, Family History Gifts founder: "What makes these sheets different is that we have designed them for legibility and for flexibility: they can stand on a desktop by your computer or you can take them to the record office with you. They are laminated for robust and frequent use.

"But we don't want it to end there, if customers like the guides, we would like to hear from them about improvements or even new ideas – what do you need to help you with your research? Tell us!

Maddy Mills, who through her own business creates unusual ways of displaying family trees (for example printing your family tree onto table mats), has been researching her own family tree since 2009. She said, "Time and time again I wish I had these handy fact sheets years ago! It's great to have pedigree chart abbreviations, Google search tips and the census dates all in one place!"

All three of the creators have been using the sheets for their own research. "It's remarkable how often I use the Handy Dates sheet," said Karen. "I keep it with me whenever I am researching."

The Family History Quick Reference Sheets pack is available from the Family History Gifts website at a special launch price of £19.99.
