Management Comments “We delivered our fourth consecutive quarter of double-digit year-over-year revenue growth, with revenue above the midpoint of our guidance,” said Dr. Mark Gitin, chief executive officer of IPG Photonics. “Our performance reflects the strength of our technology, disciplined execution, and continued progress in expanding our presence in attractive, higher-growth markets. Strong demand for our differentiated welding and additive manufacturing solutions drove growth in Industrial Solutions while disciplined execution of our key strategic initiatives across defense and semiconductor markets led to strong growth in Advanced Solutions. Additionally, I anticipate that our acquisition of Lumibird Medical, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter, will further strengthen our reach, accelerate growth across medical markets, and increase revenue in Advanced Solutions.”

Revenue growth

Reviewing a company’s long-term revenue performance reveals insights into its quality. Any business can put up a good quarter or two, but many enduring ones grow for years. Over the last five years, IPG Photonics’s demand was weak and its revenue declined by 5% per year. That outcome points to poor business quality. Semiconductors are a cyclical industry, and long-term investors should be prepared for periods of high growth followed by periods of revenue contractions.

IPG Photonics quarterly revenue

Long-term growth matters most, but within semiconductors, a half-decade historical view may miss new demand cycles or industry trends like artificial intelligence. IPG Photonics’s annualized revenue growth of 3% over the last two years is above its five-year trend, a positive sign. IPG Photonics year-on-year revenue growth

This quarter, IPG Photonics reported year-on-year revenue growth of 14.6%, and its $287.5 million of revenue exceeded Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 1.5%. Beyond the beat, this marks 5 straight quarters of growth, implying that IPG Photonics is in the middle of its cycle; a typical upcycle generally lasts 8–10 quarters. Company management is currently guiding for a 2% year-on-year increase in revenue next quarter.

Looking further ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 7.9% over the next 12 months, according to S&P. Although this projection implies its newer products and services will spur better top-line performance, it is still below average for the sector.

Product demand & outstanding inventory

Days inventory outstanding, or DIO, is an important metric for chipmakers, as it reflects a business’s capital intensity and the cyclical nature of semiconductor supply and demand. In a tight supply environment, inventories tend to be stable, allowing chipmakers to exert pricing power. Steadily increasing DIO can be a warning sign that demand is weak, and if inventories continue to rise, the company may have to downsize production.

This quarter, IPG Photonics’s DIO came in at 180, which is 26 days below its five-year average. These numbers show that despite the recent increase, there’s no indication of an excessive inventory buildup.

Key takeaways from IPG Photonics’s Q3 results

IPG Photonics delivered a mixed quarter: EPS beat analysts’ consensus estimates, and operating income topped Wall Street’s consensus by a wide margin. But revenue guidance for next quarter missed expectations, and inventory levels increased slightly. The results had some key positives, but the market seemed to be hoping for more. Shares edged lower 1.4% to $71.86 immediately after the release.
