What Happened?

Shares of iPhone and iPad maker Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) fell 9.4% in the morning session after the company reported second-quarter results that beat revenue and earnings estimates but revealed a miss in its key Services segment. The company posted revenue of $109.4 billion and earnings per share (EPS) of $2.02, surpassing Wall Street's expectations.

However, the positive results were overshadowed by a miss in a critical area. The high-margin Services segment, which includes the App Store and Apple Music, generated revenue of $30.7 billion, falling short of the $31.2 billion consensus estimate. This shortfall raised investor concerns about the growth trajectory of what has been a key driver of profitability for Apple. Despite the company's overall strong performance and growth in its Products segment, the weakness in Services led investors to focus on this challenge rather than the otherwise solid quarterly report.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Apple’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 1 move greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 16 days ago when the stock gained 4.2% on the news that the company secured regulatory approval to launch Apple Intelligence in China by integrating Alibaba's Qwen AI model. The Cyberspace Administration of China officially greenlit Apple's AI services, resolving months of uncertainty over how the iPhone maker would deploy its flagship software in its largest overseas market. To comply with local regulations, Apple will use Alibaba's Qwen model to power generative AI features—such as text and image generation—across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS for Chinese users.

The technical feasibility of this localized rollout was bolstered by reports that Apple is in talks with PrismML, a Silicon Valley startup that successfully compressed Alibaba's 27-billion parameter Qwen model from roughly 54 gigabytes to under 4 gigabytes. This compression allows the heavy AI model to run natively on an iPhone 15 without relying entirely on cloud processing. This regulatory clearance removes a major hurdle for Apple's hardware sales.

Without Apple Intelligence in China, the company faced the risk of a muted iPhone upgrade cycle in a region where domestic rivals like Huawei are already aggressively marketing their own AI features. However, geopolitical risks remain a structural headwind. With U.S. lawmakers actively scrutinizing the adoption of Chinese AI models and the broader technological rivalry intensifying, Apple will have to navigate a delicate balance between Beijing's operating mandates and Washington's tightening tech controls.

Apple is up 11.7% since the beginning of the year, but at $302.61 per share, it is still trading 11% below its 52-week high of $340.08 from July 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Apple’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,080.

ONE MORE THING: The $21 AI Application Stock Wall Street Forgot. While Wall Street obsesses over who’s building AI, one company is already using it to print money. And nobody’s paying attention.

AI chip stocks trade at ridiculous valuations. This company processes a trillion consumer signals monthly using AI and trades at a third of the price. The gap won’t last. The institutions will figure it out. You need to see this first. Read the FREE Report Before They Notice.
