The release of Johansen's book arrives as younger audiences continue to show interest in spiritual questions. Barna's The Open Generation report showed that over three in four U.S. teens (77%) say they are at least somewhat motivated (52% very, 25% somewhat) to continue learning about Christianity throughout the rest of their lives, indicating an audience for accessible scriptural narratives told in a voice younger audiences can understand.
Wordsmith World positions Johansen's retelling of Ruth's story as a response to that curiosity among teenage readers, highlighting the way the story demonstrates core Christian values. The biblical Book of Ruth follows a young widow who chooses loyalty over self-interest, staying with her mother-in-law Naomi rather than returning to her own people. Ruth gleans leftover grain to support Naomi and later approaches Boaz for help, a decision that reflects her willingness to risk security for the sake of devotion.
Johansen highlights the suitability of the book for teen Bible study groups, stating, "Youth ministry programs often turn to this narrative because it addresses love, struggle, survival, and hope in ways that speak directly to young people facing their own uncertainties."
Beyond its narrative of loyalty, Ruth's story carries a layer of meaning that many readers find central to Christian teaching. Boaz, acting as kinsman-redeemer, rescues Ruth and Naomi from poverty and vulnerability, a role many interpreters describe as a picture of Jesus rescuing those who cannot save themselves. This gives teenage readers a concrete, human story through which to approach the more abstract Christian concept of redemption.
Johansen's fictionalized version is told in the first person, keeping close to the original while adding certain details for flow. It is available from Wordsmith World as an illustrated e-book and also as an audiobook.
Betty Johansen, a West Texas native, brings her blend of faith and life experience to her adaptations of biblical accounts for a younger audience, as well as to her original fiction and non-fiction books.
