Scottsdale Plastic Surgeon Outlines Factors to Consider Before a Breast Reduction

Scottsdale, Arizona, United States - 03-29-2023 (PR Distribution™) -

Scottsdale plastic surgeon Steven H. Turkeltaub, MD offers insight into the breast reduction process, including how patients can prepare for surgery and what to expect during recovery.

Scottsdale, AZ — Breast reduction can be a highly rewarding procedure for women who struggle with overly large breasts, according to Scottsdale plastic surgeon Steven H. Turkeltaub, MD. Women with excessively large or heavy breasts—a condition known as macromastia—frequently report symptoms such as back and neck pain, rashes beneath the breasts and along the bra line, painful indentations caused by bra straps digging into the skin, diminished self-confidence and discomfort while performing certain physical activities.

Dr. Turkeltaub has been performing breast reduction surgery for many years, and in order to help patients decide whether the procedure is the right choice for them, he has offered insight into what they can expect throughout the treatment process.

Dr. Turkeltaub notes the importance of finding a surgeon with whom one feels comfortable. During the initial consultation, he aims to educate patients about the breast reduction procedure while also gaining an understanding of their individual goals. At this stage, patients can decide how much of a reduction they hope to achieve. This can also help determine the specific technique that would be used in the performance of the surgery. Dr. Turkeltaub also asserts the importance of deciding early on whether or not to pursue insurance coverage. This is because insurance companies often require extensive documentation and proof that a patient has attempted alternative treatments before they will give authorization for a breast reduction.

Once a treatment plan has been created—and eligible patients have received insurance pre-authorization—Dr. Turkeltaub encourages patients to begin preparing for the day of surgery. He generally performs the procedure on an outpatient basis, so a ride to and from the operating facility will need to be arranged in advance. He also recommends that patients arrange to have a trusted individual stay with them for at least the first 24 hours after surgery. Any necessary household chores should ideally be completed ahead of time so that patients can recover in a clean, relaxing environment while not needing to engage in strenuous activities.

Dr. Turkeltaub states that time off from work will vary depending on the nature of the patient’s job. For those with more sedentary jobs, work can typically be resumed within four to seven days. However, those with more physically demanding roles may need to take a longer leave of absence or request a temporary modification of their duties. During postoperative follow-up appointments, Dr. Turkeltaub can assess the process of an individual’s recovery and provide specific guidelines for when it is appropriate to resume more strenuous activities.

One of the most common concerns patients bring up during their breast reduction consultations is postoperative scarring, says Dr. Turkeltaub. However, in his decades of performing the procedure, he notes that the vast majority of patients are pleased with the final appearance of their breasts. Indeed, he notes that in addition to creating lighter, more proportionate breasts, a breast reduction also typically includes a built-in breast lift, as excess skin and sagging tissues are naturally addressed as part of the surgical process.

Ultimately, Dr. Turkeltaub states that breast reduction surgery can produce life-changing aesthetic and functional benefits for women who have overly large, heavy breasts. However, the decision to undergo any form of plastic surgery should not be taken lightly. Dr. Turkeltaub recommends scheduling a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon in order to ascertain whether breast reduction is the most appropriate choice for an individual’s goals.
