What Happened?
A number of stocks fell in the afternoon session after rising Treasury yields and climbing oil prices dampened investor sentiment ahead of the release of the Federal Reserve's September meeting minutes, as reported by AP News.
Yields on benchmark U.S. government debt pushed higher, with the 10-year Treasury yield reaching 5.33% and the 30-year yield advancing to 5.71%. Elevated bond yields increase borrowing costs throughout the economy and reduce the present value of future corporate earnings, which typically weighs on equity valuations. Market participants are closely watching the upcoming minutes from the Federal Reserve's September gathering following its benchmark interest rate increase.
Investors are seeking clarity regarding the central bank's future policy path and how long borrowing costs might remain elevated to curb inflation. Meanwhile, firmer crude oil prices introduce additional uncertainty surrounding corporate expense structures and the pace of broader economic expansion.
The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks.

Zooming In On Alta (ALTG)
Alta’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 45 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The previous big move we wrote about was 1 day ago when the stock gained 3.6% on the news that surging capital spending for artificial intelligence infrastructure and defense bolstered demand across power systems, data center construction, and electrical grid buildouts, with gains amplified as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite reached fresh all-time highs.
Alta is up 25.7% since the beginning of the year, but at $6.30 per share, it is still trading 24.1% below its 52-week high of $8.30 from May 2026. Despite the year-to-date gain, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Alta’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $447.13.
