What Happened?

Shares of machine vision technology company Cognex (NASDAQ: CGNX) fell 7.5% in the afternoon session after rising Treasury yields and climbing oil prices dampened investor sentiment ahead of the release of the Federal Reserve's September meeting minutes. CNBC reported that Treasury yields climbed back to multiyear highs, ahead of the Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes. The 10-year yield was up more than 3 basis points at 5.307% after touching its highest level since 2002, and the 30-year yield rose more than 4 basis points to 5.684% after hitting a 24-year high earlier. Policymakers raised interest rates in September for the first time since 2023, and traders are reading the minutes for clues on what comes next. CNBC also said the bond selloff has been tied to inflation worries and rising energy prices, with U.S. crude up 20% since the end of July. The stock was already under pressure from a Truist note earlier this week. According to TipRanks, Truist lowered its price target to $74 from $78 and kept a Hold rating in a preview of third-quarter results for industrial companies. The firm said the setup into earnings looks constructive after a sector pullback tied to doubts about spending on power, data centers, and artificial intelligence, along with questions over who pays for power, local opposition, and project delays. Higher interest rates and elevated diesel and other input costs add to the near-term debate. Truist still expects company commentary to stay broadly constructive and for 2026 estimates to move higher.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Cognex’s shares are quite volatile and have had 19 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 8 months ago when the stock gained 33.5% on the news that the company reported strong fourth-quarter 2025 results that beat analyst expectations and provided an optimistic forecast for the upcoming quarter. Cognex's revenue for the quarter grew 9.9% year-over-year to $252.3 million, surpassing Wall Street's estimates. Adjusted earnings per share also came in strong, rising 35% from the same period in the previous year to $0.27, which was also well ahead of projections. Looking forward, the company offered a positive outlook, forecasting first-quarter 2026 revenue between $235 million and $255 million. The midpoint of this range was more than 7% above what analysts had anticipated, signaling accelerating demand for its machine vision systems.

Cognex is up 67.5% since the beginning of the year, but at $61.86 per share, it is still trading 14.6% below its 52-week high of $72.42 from June 2026. Despite the year-to-date gain, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Cognex’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $764.16.
