Oregon Startup Wants to Change How Americans Go Out to Eat

By: WebWire

Oregon-based startup SKWRL LLC is releasing the SKWRL Kit, a stainless steel insulated lunch box with custom utensils and a removable, collapsible silicone to-go container with the goal of changing how Oregonians and Americans go out to eat.

After two years of research and development, the company launched a crowdfunding campaign for the SKWRL Kit on Indiegogo in August. The campaign met its initial funding goal in under 36 hours. The insulated, leak proof, stainless steel kit contains custom utensils, and is built around a collapsible, one hundred percent silicone container that is oven, microwave, dishwasher, and freezer safe. Early bird prices for the SKWRL Kit start at $59 plus shipping.

“Our main goal with this kit is to make it easy to use every day,” said Aaron Sewall, SKWRL co-founder. “We think people will embrace our product because it is going to make it easier for them to take a meal to the office, to school, or on their outdoor adventures.”

SKWRL began developing the SKWRL Kit in 2019 as a reusable to-go container designed to help eliminate single-use and food waste. A report from Natural Sustainability showed that of the over 12 million individual pieces of trash collected on beaches, in rivers, and the ocean, almost half of the waste could be attributed to takeout and food containers, utensils, and related packaging.

“It's hard to break old habits and get past the idea of doing things a certain way because that's how they've always been done, but we have seen a shift in how people think about reusing items instead of throwing them away. It started with bringing your own reusable coffee cup, the shift towards reusable grocery bags, and refusing single-use straws and cutlery at restaurants, and now we think that next step is moving away from single-use takeout containers.”
