In his new book, The Grace of God, Banwart shares a powerful collection of stories that reveal how ordinary people can become the hands and feet of Christ through simple acts of love, prayer, and obedience.
Part memoir, part devotional reflection, and part testimony to God's faithfulness, The Grace of God invites readers to discover that even during humanity's darkest moments, God is still moving, still speaking, and still equipping His people to carry His message of hope.
"The power of prayer is undeniable," says Banwart. "We prayed over every idea, and in return, God blessed us with inspiration."
As the challenges of 2020 reshaped daily life, Banwart and his family found themselves confronting many of the same fears experienced by millions of Americans. Health concerns and personal limitations felt overwhelming at times, yet what began as simple acts of kindness quickly grew into opportunities for ministry.
Christian music brought comfort, so they shared it with neighbors. Handwritten notes encouraged healthcare workers and elderly shut-ins, so they wrote more and inspired others to join them. Physical needs became apparent within the community, and once again God provided ways to serve.
Through each act of service, Banwart discovered a profound truth.
"We learned that love is an action," he explains. "We learned that anyone can be the hands and feet of our Lord."
Again and again, the family witnessed what Banwart describes as unmistakable evidence of God's presence and provision.
"Our hope is that these stories encourage others to persistently seek God through prayer," he says. "His grace is unending."
Banwart never intended to become an author. Writing initially served as a way to process his thoughts, emotions, and spiritual experiences during difficult seasons.
"What inspired me to become an author is actually a funny question," Banwart says with a smile. "I never intended to become an author. My writings were simply a way for me to work through what I was seeing and feeling and maybe, just maybe, some of those writings might bring comfort to others."
His passion for writing stretches back decades. As a teenager, he wrote poetry and songs. Later he wrote software manuals, spiritual retreat guides, and personal journals during seasons when he sought clarity and direction from God.
Yet accepting that his words might hold value for others proved to be his greatest challenge.
"Many people read what I wrote and told me I needed to publish a book," Banwart recalls. "I usually laughed and replied, 'Sure.' It wasn't until my sister, who had always been brutally honest about my work growing up, encouraged me to continue writing that I finally believed perhaps God had something bigger in mind."
Banwart credits both faith and literature for shaping his voice as a writer.
"My first inspiration would be God," he says. "But my greatest human inspiration is Khalil Gibran. His writing is simple enough for teenagers to appreciate, yet profound enough to reveal new layers of meaning each time you revisit it."
His writing process itself reflects the honesty and humility that characterize the book.
"My approach to writer's block is probably not one I recommend," Banwart jokes. "Usually I stop trying, pray, complain to my wife about not being able to write, and watch television. Eventually the words come. When they do, it often feels inspired by the Holy Spirit."
At its core, The Grace of God is a message of trust.
"What I really want readers to take away from this book is that God is present no matter what desert they find themselves in," Banwart explains. "No matter how cluttered your mind is, no matter how broken you feel, our Lord is right there beside you. Sometimes God allows us to walk through deserts because He is removing the things standing between us and a deeper relationship with Him."
When asked to describe his own journey in three words, Banwart answers simply:
"Pain. Reconciliation. Grace."
Banwart spent much of his life in northern Illinois and graduated summa cum laude from Trinity International University. What appeared to be a promising corporate career was unexpectedly interrupted when chronic health issues resulted in permanent long-term disability, dramatically changing both his priorities and his path forward.
Rather than surrendering to disappointment, Banwart embraced new opportunities for purpose and service. He transformed a woodburning hobby into a small business and became a devoted stay-at-home father to his three sons, discovering joy in family life and everyday moments.
Although he sensed God's call for many years, it was not until the events of 2020 that he fully leaned into that calling. Through honest conversations with Christ, personal reflection, and faithful obedience, a collection of journal entries and spiritual insights slowly evolved into his first published work.
Today, Banwart continues encouraging others through creativity, vulnerability, and storytelling that points readers toward God's faithfulness in every season, especially the difficult ones.
When he is not writing, Banwart can often be found on his lanai, surrounded by the beauty of creation, watching oranges, lemons, coconuts, bananas, and flowers grow while listening to birds sing and observing cranes raise their young near the water's edge.
"It is a wonderful place to pray and listen for God," he says. "Nature has a way of reminding us of His beauty, His creativity, and His presence."
