Commonwealth Care Alliance® Senior Care Options Plan Achieves 4 Star Quality Rating from CMS

Health plan excels in numerous quality measures, including care coordination, behavioral health management, and falls prevention

Commonwealth Care Alliance® (CCA), a mission-driven healthcare services organization that offers innovative health plans and care delivery programs to individuals with the most significant needs, received a 4 out of 5 stars from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as part of the 2026 annual Star Quality Ratings. The rating is for CCA’s Massachusetts Senior Care Options (SCO) (HMO D-SNP) plan, designed to serve the unique needs of individuals aged 65 and older who are dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid.

“I am proud of my CCA colleagues who are tirelessly working with our network providers to ensure the best quality care for our members,” said John Koehn, President of CCA. “Our star rating reflects CCA’s longstanding excellence in care coordination along with our efforts to improve how we manage the medical, social, and behavioral health needs of those we serve. We look forward to building on these successes as we support our members to live their fullest lives while staying healthy and independent in their communities.”

CCA earned strong ratings across multiple quality improvement measures, demonstrating the organization’s focus on member-centered care and provider partnerships. In particular, the CCA SCO plan earned the best possible ratings for Special Needs Plan (SNP) Care Management, Transitions of Care, and Reducing the Risk of Falling. CCA also earned strong quality scores for improving or maintaining mental health through early detection using behavioral health screenings and specialized behavioral health care programs. Additionally, the plan improved its raw score in multiple pharmacy quality measures, which included prescribing statins for people with diabetes, medication adherence for hypertension, and lowering cholesterol.

Over 45% of CCA SCO members are living with four or more chronic conditions and over 26% with a major physical or behavioral health disability. Additionally, nearly 59% of CCA SCO members are nursing home certifiable yet can live safely and independently at home with CCA’s care and support.

CMS’ quality ratings system is designed to help consumers, their families, and caregivers easily compare the quality of the plans available to them and empower them to make the best health care decisions. For 2026, CMS rated Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD) plans on a scale of 1 to 5 stars.

Earlier this year, CCA became part of the CareSource family of companies. CareSource is a nationally recognized, nonprofit managed care organization that serves over 2 million members in 14 states. In addition to CCA’s recognition, CareSource received a rating of 4.5 stars for its D-SNP in Ohio.
