OneLegacy, the local organ procurement organization that serves seven counties in Southern California, is joining thousands of organizations, hospitals, transplant centers, and cities across the country to celebrate National Donate Life Month in April in an effort to inspire more people to register as an organ, eye and tissue donor.
Nationwide more than 100,000 people are waiting to receive a lifesaving heart, liver, lung, kidney or pancreas transplant. In California more than 20,000 people are currently on the waiting list, but there are not enough donors to meet the need as less than 1% of all deaths qualify for donation. A single organ donor can save the lives of up to eight people and improve the lives of 75 more by donating their corneas and tissue.
National Donate Life Month recognizes the generosity of those who have saved and healed lives by becoming donors, while also highlighting the critical need for more people to say “yes” to donation. In support of those goals, all month long OneLegacy will spearhead a number of community outreach, education and awareness activities including:
- Flags Across America – OneLegacy is joining hundreds of organ organizations across the nation to rally every donor hospital and transplant center to raise the Donate Life flag during the month of April. The “Flags Across America” initiative started in 2009 to commemorate the cause and to honor those who have given the gift of life through donation. OneLegacy is participating in more than 30 flag raising ceremonies during the month of April, which will take place across all seven counties in the greater Los Angeles and surrounding areas.
- Blue and Green Spirit Week – From April 7 to April 12, OneLegacy is celebrating Blue and Green Spirit Week with a series of activities in Southern California. On April 11, hospitals and transplant centers will join with OneLegacy to encourage all employees to wear Blue & Green, the official colors of Donate Life, with the goal of amplifying the power of organ donation and the need for local communities to register to be donors. OneLegacy encourages local businesses and everyone in the community to show their support by wearing blue and green that day.
- Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Partnership -- OneLegacy has a long-standing successful partnership with the DMV to make it easy for people to register to be a donor. This has included a OneLegacy presence at dozens of DMV locations throughout Southern California, with an emphasis on locations where the lowest donor registration rates exist. OneLegacy kicked off Donate Life Month by partnering with the DMV in Fontana to offer a free community resources fair and organ, eye and tissue donor education event on April 2, 2025.
- LAFF4LIFE Comedy Events for Register Donors – During the month of April, LEVITY LIVE, LLC and their 12 comedy clubs nationwide are proud to support the Donate Life cause with the new LAFF4LIFE program. LAFF4LIFE offers free tickets to comedy-loving registered organ donors at IMPROV and Levity Live clubs across the country. The program is launching in Los Angeles during the month of April in observance of Donate Life Month. LAFF4LIFE is spearheaded by double organ recipient, comedian, and author of The Tin Man Diaries, Jamie Alcroft, who also volunteers his time as a OneLegacy Ambassador. Those interested in attending the comedy events in Los Angeles can visit improv.com/donors and levitylive.com/donors.
- City Proclamations – During the month of April, OneLegacy is reaching out to hundreds of elected City and County Officials to encourage them to issue proclamations for Donate Life Month. More than 100 OneLegacy Ambassadors are volunteering their time in April to adopt their local cities, share their stories of donation, and receive special City and County proclamations.
- Donate Life Run/Walk –OneLegacy will celebrate its 23rd annual OneLegacy Donate Life Run/Walk, at Azusa Pacific University on Saturday, April 26th. The event will gather more than 3,000 participants who will run or walk to honor the power of organ, eye and tissue donation. Those interested in participating can register at www.OneLegacyRunWalk.org
“Every year we celebrate the power of organ, eye and tissue donation during Donate Life Month by hosting a series of events at each of the communities we serve,” said E’Tiffany Jones, Director of Communications and Public Education at OneLegacy. “We are fortunate to partner with so many caring hospitals, transplant centers, community partners and city officials to mobilize, inform and inspire people across local communities to register as donors during National Donate Life month and, by doing so, help save and heal lives.”
The opportunity to donate and to receive a lifesaving transplant transcends national, racial, ethnic and religious boundaries, as well as sexual orientation. Organ, eye and tissue donation simply helps those in greatest need. Becoming an organ, eye, or tissue donor is easy and can be done by registering online at OneLegacy.org/register or by “checking YES” at your local DMV.
