Two innovative research articles aimed at enhancing the precision and predictability of eyelid surgery have been published in international journals indexed in the Science Citation Index (SCI), drawing worldwide attention.
The recently published articles deal with a biomechanical approach to correcting eyelid hollowing and asymmetry, and a formula-based model for designing double eyelid surgery, and both have been recognized for demonstrating the potential of scientifically standardizing surgical planning based on clinical data.
The first article was published in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (July 2025 issue) and introduced the “Rouleau phenomenon,” a biomechanical concept applied for the first time to eyelid surgery. The study retrospectively analyzed 60 surgical cases performed between 2021 and 2023 and showed that combining fat grafting with upper blepharoplasty produced highly predictable outcomes and improved aesthetic results.
The second article appeared in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (May 2022 issue) and applied the concept of a “Movable Pulley” to double eyelid surgery. Based on approximately 1,500 clinical cases, the study proposed a formula-driven method of designing incision length and fixation points. It has been evaluated as a scientific model that enhances predictability in cases involving asymmetry, uneven folds, and design imbalance, while also being recognized for its potential as an educational tool.
Both articles stand out for solving real-world surgical challenges by integrating anatomy, physics, and physiology. Beyond technical know-how, they have paved the way for quantifying and standardizing surgical outcomes. Their publication in SCI journals demonstrates that the studies meet the highest standards of scientific rigor, reproducibility, and international contribution.
The researcher who designed these studies, performed the surgeries, analyzed the data, and authored the articles is South Korean plastic surgeon Dr. Jin Hwang.
Dr. Hwang specializes exclusively in eyelid surgery and has built his research on thousands of surgical cases conducted at a single medical institution in Korea. Through these studies, he has become one of the first Asian researchers to bring a scientific approach to eyelid surgery, gaining international recognition.
He has also been active in the academic community. At Aesthetic Plastic Surgery 2025, he presented a new technique for simultaneous eyelid surgery and xanthelasma removal, and he was recognized as an outstanding presenter by the Korean Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery for his SCI-based research.
These achievements highlight the anatomical diversity and high degree of precision required in eyelid surgery, and they demonstrate that Korea’s surgical expertise and research in this field have reached a world-class level.
