A tender, unsentimental novel about memory, motherhood and the risk of kindness: An inflammable act of kindness by Monika Killeen

Monika Killeen’s An Inflammable Act of Kindness follows Meli as she moves between past and present, confronting family fractures, motherhood and the quiet choices that remold a life. Economical, wry and deeply observant, the novel traces a childhood in former Czechoslovakia through an adult life in and around London - therapist, partner, mother - where ordinary moments reveal stubborn echoes of the past.

Killeen writes with emotional honesty and a sharp eye for the small scenes that matter. A child’s apology, a late‑night row, a therapy hour, an unexpected tenderness. The novel’s refusal of easy verdicts, neither scapegoating nor saccharine forgiveness, makes its examination of intergenerational mother‑daughter ties both exacting and humane. Kindness here is dangerous and hopeful in equal measure, risky for someone raised to expect hurt, but also the hinge of possible change.

For readers of literary fiction about women’s lives, family inheritance and moral nuance, An Inflammable Act of Kindness delivers a compact, moving study of how we carry and transform what we inherit. Tender but unsentimental, it insists that flawed people remain worthy of love, and that becoming whole is a brave, incremental work.
