Samuel Rodriguez Warns Against a Culture of Constant Distraction and Calls for More Intentional Living
Samuel Rodriguez, Los Angeles, California

The California pastor and president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference says creating space for reflection, purpose, and meaningful relationships is becoming increasingly important in today’s fast-paced world.

Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, Lead Pastor of New Season Church and President of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC), is encouraging individuals to take a more intentional approach to how they spend their time, attention, and energy amid what he describes as a growing culture of constant distraction.

Rodriguez's comments come as many Americans report feeling increasingly overwhelmed by the pace of modern life. According to the American Psychological Association's Stress in America research, approximately 75% of Americans report experiencing physical or emotional symptoms related to stress. Rodriguez believes the trend highlights the importance of slowing down, focusing on priorities, and creating space for reflection.

"Many people are moving from one responsibility to the next without ever creating space to think, reflect, or evaluate where they're going," said Rodriguez. "When that becomes a way of life, it's easy to lose sight of purpose."

Throughout his decades of ministry and leadership, Rodriguez has emphasized the importance of reflection, prayer, and intentional decision-making. From preaching his first sermon at age 16 to leading New Season Church and founding the NHCLC, he has relied on periods of focused thought to guide major decisions and initiatives.

One habit that continues to shape his daily routine is protecting uninterrupted time for reflection.

"Some of my best ideas for sermons, books, and leadership initiatives came during quiet moments without distractions," Rodriguez said. "We often underestimate the value of simply slowing down long enough to think clearly."

Rodriguez believes intentional living is not about doing less. Instead, he says it is about making deliberate choices that align with a person's values, priorities, and long-term goals.

"People are searching for meaning, identity, and purpose," he said. "The challenge is that purpose rarely reveals itself in the middle of constant noise. Sometimes clarity comes when we create room to listen, learn, and reflect."

He encourages individuals to evaluate how they spend their time, make room for meaningful relationships, and establish daily habits that support personal growth. Rodriguez says even small moments of reflection can lead to better decisions, stronger relationships, and a greater sense of direction.

Throughout his career, Rodriguez has worked across faith, media, education, and public leadership. While those responsibilities have evolved, he says one lesson has remained consistent: intentional people are better equipped to navigate challenges and create lasting impact.

"My assignment has always been bigger than a pulpit," Rodriguez said. "It's about serving people where faith and culture meet."

Rodriguez believes that creating a more purposeful life starts with small, consistent choices. Whether through reflection, community involvement, meaningful conversations, or simply setting aside time to think, he says people can regain focus in a world that constantly competes for their attention.

"Every day presents an opportunity to live with greater purpose," Rodriguez said. "When we become intentional about where we invest our attention, we often discover what matters most."
