The way we work has changed—but the need for community hasn’t. The Speakeasy lowers barriers for early-stage entrepreneurs, creatives, and remote workers by offering an experience built upon the philosophy of people over productivity.
From where Executive Director Chelsea Marburger sits at the long, handcrafted wooden table in the hub of The Speakeasy’s industrial-chic common space, she sees a real estate agent, a sales consultant, a freelance graphic designer, a retired nonprofiteer, a chief financial officer, and a team of web developers.
It’s a typical sampling of the nearly 200 members who call The Speakeasy their work home, and Marburger couldn’t be prouder of the culture she’s cultivated since taking the helm in early 2023 at Indiana’s first coworking space.
“We’re not just four walls, a floor, and a door to our members,” Marburger says. “Community caretaking and personal responsibility are built into our rules and culture, which often results in stronger connections among members. Everyone has something to contribute that enriches the community in some way. One of my predecessors aptly called this phenomenon ‘know-how via know-who.’”
Access for All
Located in Midtown Indianapolis along the Monon Trail and two blocks from public transit, The Speakeasy takes immense pride in its accessibility.
There are no membership levels or hierarchies of access. For one flat, monthly rate, every member is privy to unlimited communal resources: coffee, snacks, comfortable workspaces, private rooms, Wi-Fi, and free parking. The space’s shocking affordability—far less than any other coworking space of its caliber in Indianapolis—is thanks to the income generated from hosting after-hours private events. Coworking costs are subsidized by this revenue stream to make membership as financially accessible as possible.
The Speakeasy is industry-agnostic, meaning members of a wide variety of business sectors are welcome. “The plurality represented in our membership not only makes our community vibrant and unique but also contributes to our accessibility. As a nonprofit, our mission is to lower barriers for all types of people, purposes, and ventures,” Marburger says.
What Is Coworking?
Increased productivity, enhanced business growth, reduced operational costs, and a state-of-the-art collaborative workspace are among the many benefits of joining a coworking community.
Monthly happy hours encourage members to “get to know people outside of their work,” says Marburger. Regular lunch outings not only foster relationships but also support the neighborhood economy.
Above all, Marburger emphasizes the importance of connection and community. “The allure of a name like The Speakeasy is that we’re a best-kept secret,” she says, “but we want to let people in on the secret because what we have is one of a kind and only made better by welcoming more talented members from across the city.”
