October is recognized as Children's Health Month by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and other agencies and organizations. CDC reports that from their earliest stages of development through puberty, children are particularly vulnerable to exposure to environmental contaminants because their bodies are small and still developing, so they ingest and absorb more chemicals.
To spread public awareness of this important topic and provide information about ways people can protect children from a number of potential environmental exposure risks, EPA has created a list of online educational resources in support of Children's Health Month. Topics include everything from mold and indoor air quality (IAQ), to lead, pesticides, and even mercury.
“Unfortunately, in some indoor and outdoor environments where parents assume their children are safe, they could actually be exposed to things like radon, lead, asbestos, volatile organic compounds, viruses, mold, bacteria, PCBs, or other concerns,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “Some of these substances, like mold, could act as asthma triggers and/or allergens due to the air children breathe and the substances they touch. These are all reasons why understanding indoor and outdoor environmental quality conditions in schools, daycares, and other locations children spend a significant amount of time is so important and why CTSI promotes the efforts of Children's Health Month.”
