Chicago Public Schools to Phase Out Police Presence by 2024 in Favor of New Safety Policies

By: NewsUSA

(Matthew Du, NewsUSA Reporter) - The Chicago Board of Education to remove School Resource officers from Chicago Public Schools has spurned controversy from the city’s community. Though 39 of the district’s 634 schools have voted to retain a total of 57 full-time SROS, the new resolution directs the CPS CEO to develop a new districtwide policy that makes it explicit that the use of SROs within District schools will end by the start of the 2024-2025 school year.

As an alternative, the Board of Education looks to create a more comprehensive school safety policy that does not include the presence of police in an educational environment. The debate only continues to underscore the balancing act of having safe procedures alongside creating a supportive educational environment for their students.
