Dry eye disease can be caused by one or several different factors, including medications, humidity levels, environmental conditions, hobbies, genetics, age, systemic conditions, and more. What often happens is the meibomian glands — oil glands located along the edge of the eyelids — become clogged, meaning not enough oils are being added to the tear film. This results in a compromised tear film that evaporates too quickly, leaving the eyes unprotected. Other major factors, like chronic inflammation, can worsen dry eye, too.
